The current undeclared wars were never meant to be won. It's like from the movie DUNE, the spice must flow. And the profits of continuous war must flow.

Looks like a joint US and ANA (Afghan) patrol. You are right General, the tactics we are being forced to use over there are not meant to win this thing (not that Afghanistan has ever been won by anybody). What a waste. What a travesty. Bx3

Like Judge Napolitano said the other day, "Why are these wars UNDECLARED? Because if we were to DECLARE WAR, and Iraq surrenders in 2 days, the war is over. And that's the last thing this government wants."

Wow....they were easy pickin's. WTF??? They allowed the enemy to control the ridge top and then walked through that holler??? that makes NO sense.

Not you can't win, but you won't be allowed to win.

It is hard to know all of the facts on the ground from just the video but it does appear that the ranges of this engagement were extended. I have attached a PDF link that discusses the disadvantage that our troops are facing in the long range engagements being fought in A-Stan. It is worth the read and makes and explains some good points.

In short, the enemy is using PK type weapons (7.62x54) RPG's and mortars while the majority of our guys are limited to the rather anemic (at long range) 5.56 round. Only a small percentage of any given US unit has heavier long range capabilities.

Let this be a lesson for everyone in the potential coming of uncertain times, one size does not fit all, especially when it comes to firearms. Got 7.62? Bx3

The old line is that "it's all about the man on your shoulder". The failure in the logic is that it would be better for both you and the man on your shoulder if you weren't out there.

If it was a real war, they would be destroying opium and cocaine production to hit the Taliban's pocket book. The reality is that soldiers are told not to interfere and production is an all time high.

It appears in the video that the ambush was originally triggered from the other side of the ridge. When the patrol took cover behind the ridge (as seen in the video), they probably did not realize that they had a second (and probably primary) ambush waiting for them on the backside. They were caught in a crossfire which means that there really wasn't anywhere to hide. This appeared to be a well thought out ambush with good tactics and a videographer to boot. Our adversaries are crafty. Our guys are also wearing/carrying about 50lbs of gear which makes them pretty easy targets in the mountains at altitude.

Nomen, I disagree with statements like the one I highlighted. I can guarantee you that it is a real war over there for both sides who are fighting it. Just because our worthless politicians are too chicken shyt to officially declare it for what it really is and unleash us does not make it any less dangerous on the ground.

You are correct that in some cases we have not destroyed opium fields in an effort to not piss off the locals. In my opinion, we have never won a war by winning the hearts and minds of our enemies. That failed strategy is nothing but a week minded progressive illusion. Total destruction through total war is what wins in the end. Thousands of years of history does not lie. If we as a country no longer have the stomach for what is necessary to win, we should give up the warfight and stop trying to kid ourselves because I guarantee you that we are not kidding our enemies. Don't get me wrong, Bx3. What I am saying is that I believe as far a PTB are concerned, it is not a real war. I know all too well from friends who have been there that the fighting and dying is very real.
